“Space is a doubt: I need to keep marking it, defining it; it is never mine, it has never been given to me, I must conquer it.” (G. Perec)
The work was made for the KUMU Art Museum’s exhibition “Between the Archive and Architecture” and consists of groups of different sized photos, a looping video and expansion of screen reflection on the wall.
While researching the vaults of a building’s cellar floor, shedding some light - not only by flipping the switch and opening the drawers, but using very long exposure and different spatial arrangement of photos I aimed to reach the state of space, which simultaneously has brought the vaults to the lowest floor of a building, however, with this act aimed to provide convenience these as if would slip out of hand again.
The video, filmed in a courtyard of a museum during the height of summer with shiny light of sun, features surfaces, usually dark, but this time blinded with the sun - creating the effect of coal white. With continuous closing and opening of the door the gallery space gains new potential - either the clear white screen with closing of the doors, or the opening of a room, in expectation.
